THE FORUM

The ARCASIA Forum brings Asian architects together to discuss architecture and the Built environment. Held annually in a different member country, it fosters collaboration on regional issues.

Polymathic Excellence:

Crafting Narratives, Designing Tomorrows

This conference is a celebration of that polymathic spirit, where ideas, skills, and insights from across the globe converge to design a better tomorrow. It invites participants to think beyond blueprints, beyond boundaries-just as the great polymaths of history did. Together, let us craft the future, not through a single lens, but through the prism of many disciplines, where the power of narrative and the precision of design meet to shape a world that is resilient, innovative, and inspiring. This theme challenges each one of us to embrace our inner polymath, to be architects of not just buildings, but of tomorrow’s world.

The theme sets the stage for exploration of how multidisciplinary mastery shapes our world. Rooted in the timeless legacy of polymaths—those rare individuals whose brilliance transcends a single discipline—this theme calls for architects and designers to embody the same spirit of boundless creativity and curiosity.

Vishvakarma: The Divine Polymath

In the vast tapestry of myth and legend, Vishvakarma, the celestial architect in Hindu mythology, exemplifies the essence of polymathy. Known as the divine craftsman, Vishvakarma's genius stretched across architecture, engineering, sculpture, and metallurgy. He built the awe-inspiring palaces of the gods, forged celestial chariots, and crafted divine weapons. His ability to seamlessly blend art and science centuries ago resonates with the modern architect’s role: fusing disciplines to create lasting, functional beauty.

"Embodying the spirit of the divine polymath, architects transcend boundaries, blending disciplines to create lasting impact. Like Vishvakarma’s works, modern design unites art and science into timeless innovation."

In the 21st century, architects have emerged as modern polymaths, effortlessly integrating art, science, technology, and social understanding into their designs. Our increasingly complex world demands that architects transcend traditional boundaries to address the intertwined challenges of sustainability, urbanization, and human well-being. Today’s architect is not merely a designer of buildings but a curator of experiences, a problem-solver, a technologist, and a storyteller—all wrapped into one.

The Intrinsic Nature of Architecture

Architecture is, by its very nature, a multidisciplinary endeavor. It requires a deep understanding of engineering, materials science, environmental science, and even psychology and sociology. The architect must think holistically—building not just for today, but for tomorrow, weaving together the fabric of what is functional, beautiful, and enduring.

"In a complex world, architects transcend boundaries, curating experiences that address sustainability, urbanization, and human well-being."
